REAFFIRMATION. This AMPP standard test method specifies procedures to evaluate cathodic disbondment resistance of the steel structure coating systems under cathodic protection, such as buried or submerged pipeline and tank linings. The standard covers all test specimen geometries and test temperatures. This standard also takes into consideration all test parameters with the goal of the standard to be used during the selection of protective coating systems for use under cathodic protection. This test method is intended for use by facility owners, coating applicators, and coating manufacturers.

The use of cased carrier pipe for pipelines crossing under highways and railroads has been common practice in the industry. The first cased crossings were made using large-diameter pipe. The carrier pipe was mechanically coupled and pushed through the casing, and the coupling or collars were in direct contact with it. When coatings came into general use, isolating spacers were made of hemp rope saturated with pipe-coating enamel. End seals consisting of either concrete or pipe-coating enamel were poured into each end of the casing. The current practice of installing cased carrier pipe has changed only slightly since the beginning of its use. External loading of the carrier pipe has now been eliminated by the installation of heavy-wall casing pipe, and isolating spacers are used to prevent electrical contact between the casing and the carrier pipe. End seals are used to keep electrolyte (e.g., mud, water) out of the annular space between the carrier pipe and casing.

This Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) standard test method presents guidelines and procedures for use primarily by corrosion control personnel in the pipeline industry to determine the general condition of a pipeline coating. These techniques are used to measure the coating conductance (inverse of coating resistance) on sections of underground pipelines. This test method applies only to pipe coated with dielectric coatings.
When surveying a coated pipeline system, it may be necessary to determine the conductance of the coating. The conductance of a coating can vary considerably along the pipeline. Variations may be caused by changes in average soil resistivity, terrain, and quality of construction. To obtain data for coating conductance calculations, interrupted structure-to-electrolyte potentials and line current readings are taken at pre-selected intervals. It should be noted that the average soil resistivity has a direct effect on the coating conductance measurement. Because soil resistivity can affect the coating conductance, it must be known when evaluating a section of a pipeline coating.
This standard contains the requirements for ferrous metallic abrasive used for the removal of rust, mill scale, paint, or other surface coating systems by blast cleaning.
This standard covers previously unused abrasive material. It does not address cleanliness of recycled abrasive processed through field or shop abrasive blast cleaning units. Requirements for recycled ferrous metallic abrasive are contained in SSPC-AB 2.
