Details of a new protocol for evaluating the effectiveness of coatings to reduce corrosion of steel structures is presented in this paper. Basic concepts of accelerated testing specified in American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards and recent research investigations were used to develop a procedure that can provide conclusive results within 2400 hours of exposure as compared to more than 5000 hours in current practices.
The primary structure of many outdoor baseball parks and football stadiums is exposed structural steel. These facilities are often located in major cities in areas that may present challenges in control of corrosion. The challenge is also manifested in the fact that the structural steel frame becomes an architectural feature which must be maintained as an aesthetic element.

REAFFIRMATION. This AMPP standard test method specifies procedures to evaluate cathodic disbondment resistance of the steel structure coating systems under cathodic protection, such as buried or submerged pipeline and tank linings. The standard covers all test specimen geometries and test temperatures. This standard also takes into consideration all test parameters with the goal of the standard to be used during the selection of protective coating systems for use under cathodic protection. This test method is intended for use by facility owners, coating applicators, and coating manufacturers.
Steel structures are often fabricated by bolting (or riveting) structural components together. Bolted joints result in multiple crevices between the bolted members and fasteners. These crevices are typically more susceptible to corrosion than flat surfaces because they tend to retain water/contaminants, they are difficult to properly coat, and the crevice geometry tends to support electrochemical phenomena that accelerate corrosion. This paper will evaluate the effectiveness of various coating practices at mitigating corrosion around these joints.

The intent of this information is to understand the status of vinyl technology, identify and discuss other systems that have historically been used as an alternative, and to review the possibilities of new technologies for these applications.
