Due to its success in the ductile iron wastewater pipe market, ceramic epoxy coatings are being increasingly specified and successfully applied on nearly every substrate used for immersion service in both the water & wastewater industry. Some unique characteristics set these epoxy coatings apart from their traditional counterparts. For instance, ceramic epoxy systems provide high-film builds, eliminate undercutting, minimize permeability, provide superior edge retention and form a non-ablative film.
Industry constantly seeks improved methods to evaluate protective coatings. In immersion service, protective coatings act to reduce electrochemical activity at the metal/coating interface. Tracking this activity via the use of segmented panel testing appears to offer additional insight into coating performance that may aid in coating design and predicting longer-term performance.
Stainless steel is selected for use in the municipal waterworks industry because of its inherent corrosion resistance properties. Designers oftentimes overlook the associated problems with coupling stainless steel with carbon steel metals. When these materials are electrically connected and placed into aqueous environments (immersion service) accelerated corrosion of the anodic carbon steel metal is initiated.
REAFFIRMATION. This AMPP standard test method specifies procedures to evaluate cathodic disbondment resistance of the steel structure coating systems under cathodic protection, such as buried or submerged pipeline and tank linings. The standard covers all test specimen geometries and test temperatures. This standard also takes into consideration all test parameters with the goal of the standard to be used during the selection of protective coating systems for use under cathodic protection. This test method is intended for use by facility owners, coating applicators, and coating manufacturers.
