Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology which involves capturing CO2 and injecting into geological formations is seen as a focus area for reducing CO2 emissions and sustainable future. One of the key challenges for CCS is material selection for construction of wells for injection and storage where the materials can be subjected to a complex environmental mix with various impurities present in the CO2 stream along with different phases within the well. Knowledge and understanding of corrosion and cracking performance of various materials in different environmental conditions relevant to CCS wells can provide a basis for material selection. Being a relatively new field there is an effort to build up knowledge base via testing, characterizing materials suitable for long term well service. In this study, martensitic, supermartensitic and super duplex stainless steels along with Age Hardenable (AH) Nickel Alloy were tested for both corrosion and cracking performance in different CCS type environments. The testing simulated exposure to injected fluid phase, interface between injected fluid and water phase and completely immersed in water phase. The details of testing performed results obtained along with discussions is presented so that it can provide guidance on material compatibility for some of the CCS environments.

UNS S83071 is a recently developed super duplex stainless steel with the composition 30Cr-7Ni-3.5Mo-N, optimized for general corrosion resistance. Previously presented data have shown that UNS S83071 has excellent acid corrosion resistance as well as excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Furthermore, the grade has very high mechanical strength with good microstructure stability and weldability. This paper presents new data from general corrosion testing of UNS S83071 in various acid and caustic environments, including formic acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide, and others. The results show that UNS S83071 has excellent acid and caustic general corrosion resistance, demonstrating the suitability of the grade in several corrosive environments. UNS S83071 is a good candidate material for applications within chemical industry, and the presented data can assist in material selection e.g. for heat exchangers or equipment used in acid or caustic production plants.

Austenitic-ferritic stainless steels, commonly known as duplex stainless steels (DSSs), are a group of materials typically consisting of equal amounts austenite and ferrite. DSSs are well-known materials in chemical industry and are often a cost-effective alternative as they combine high mechanical strength and fatigue resistance with good corrosion properties. Contributing to the cost-effectiveness is the low nickel content compared to austenitic stainless steels. Advantages with DSSs are high chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance (SCC), where austenitic steels with moderate nickel content are inherently more sensitive. In combinations with carbon steel it can be a benefit to use DSSs since carbon steel and DSSs have matching thermal expansion.

In Oil & Gas industries, Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steels and Ni-Cr-Mo alloys with Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) lower than 40 could be selected for Rigid Production subsea risers, pipeline, and associated structure’s piping, according to a CO2/H2S corrosion assessment that considers all steady and transient conditions foreseen to operate the reservoir.

However, there are frequently some localized corrosion concerns for these materials during the installation and pre-commissioning of the line, when the internal surface of the line could be in contact temporarily with untreated seawater. These concerns systematically lead to discard the selection of these materials and to select, for conservative purpose, UNS N06625 that is admitted immune to localized corrosion in ambient seawater in international standard and operator’s specification, whatever the outcomes of the CO2/H2 corrosion assessment.

In natural seawater, microorganisms can fix, grow and develop on practically any surface, including stainless steels.The term biofilm is generally used for communities of microorganisms embedded in an organic polymer matrix (e.g. exopolysaccharides), produced by the microorganisms themselves) and adhering to a surface, irrespective of the environment in which they develop. Stainless steels are widely used for different applications in seawater such as the oil and gas, desalination and marine energy industries. The presence of a biofilm on passive alloys such as stainless steels or nickel-based alloys can strongly enhance the cathodic reactions, and shift their open-circuit potential (OCP) to the noble direction.

Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRAs) have been widely used in oil & gas process systems since the 1980s due to their excellent resistance towards uniform corrosion in aggressive environments such as seawater and produced water containing CO₂, organic acids and/or production chemicals. However, cases of localized corrosion in the form of pitting and crevice corrosion have regularly been observed. As an example, ISO⁽²⁾ 21457 limits the max. operating temperature to 20⁰C for 25 Cr super duplex stainless steel (UNS S32750/760) and 6-Mo austenittic stainless steels (UNS S31254) in chlorinated seawater systems, to avoid crevice corrosion.¹

Biomass-derived pyrolysis oils (bio-oils) are recognized as a renewable energy source that could
aid in the reduction of fossil fuel use. Bio-oils exhibit higher corrosivity to common ferrous alloys because the oils contain organic acids and water. A series of corrosion studies were previously performed to determine the corrosion rates of ferrous alloys exposed in bio-oils for a quantitative evaluation of the material compatibility. The key information from these previous studies is that ferrous alloys with more Cr, Ni, and Mo are needed for compatibility with bio-oils.
