The corrosion of carbon steel materials in brine solutions challenges industry to weigh the economics of lower cost materials of construction against the mechanical integrity and service life of equipment. The data and comparisons contained here will consider this challenge from a slightly different perspective, individually examining the effects of dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, and liquid velocity on corrosion of carbon steel. Model results will be compared with literature data and laboratory experiments. Environmental conditions will be limited to near neutral pH (5-9), temperature ranging from 22oC to 55oC, and O2 atmospheres up to 101.325 kPa. Results indicate the most important effects are oxygen concentration and velocity. Temperature has a secondary effect through the range considered. The range of pH was intentionally limited so as to minimize its influence on corrosion rates.
