Waterborne acrylic-based systems for corrosion protection
End-users are constantly seeking flexibility with corrosion protection in order to maximize productivity without compromising on performance. One of the drawbacks to current industry standard technologies is that the films left on the metal surface after application of the rust preventatives are waxy or oily. These waxy or oily films can be easily damaged and require special handling to provide maximum protection but they have the advantage of being easily removed. In order to increase the productivity of the end-users a dry-to-touch waterborne rust preventative was developed based on an acrylic resin. The film left by this acrylic-based rust preventative allows for more rigorous handling while maintaining ease of removal. Accelerated corrosion testing was conducted with the acrylic rust preventative in order to evaluate the performance. The acrylic-based rust preventative gives a tenacious barrier film that provides excellent corrosion protection on difficult to protect substrates.
