Expanding the basic knowledge for improved understanding of H2S corrosion relating to the thermodynamics of H2S solubility polymorphism of iron sulfide corrosion products the formation or dissolution of iron sulfide scale and the protectiveness of an iron sulfide scale requires increased investigation. Inconsistencies of prevailing expressions for H2S solubility constant (KH2S) the first dissociation constant (Ka1) and the second dissociation constant (Ka2) have been reviewed and experimentally challenged at 25oC 60oC and 80oC. Expressions for KH2S Ka1 and Ka2 were compared with experimental pH values and model predicted pH values for this range of temperature show a best prediction model for hydrogen sulfide solubility and dissociation in an H2S-H2O system.
Polymorphs of iron sulfides can form as corrosion products in H2S corrosion but the mechanisms related to the formation of iron sulfides remain unclear. Ferrous ions were added into an H2S/N2 purged solution which developed mackinawite in the H2S-H2O-Fe2+ system at 25oC while greigite and pyrite were detected at 60oC. The solubility product constants for the formed iron sulfides were determined at equilibrium. The precipitate was separated from each test solution by filtration and the recovered solid was analyzed.
