The author will present on the various generic coatings technologies available for lining concrete and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Discussion will include epoxy, polyurethane and polyurea technologies. The goal of the presentation will be to provide some guidance to the attendees on when is the right application to select each technology as part of a specification.
With coating and lining of concrete, while it may seem like a simple, novel task, there are always challenges. Even though concrete may be one of the largest construction materials used today, it is a complex structural matrix that can be ever changing even in a single placement. The need for coating concrete to either waterproof, or extend the life of the structure is not new to our industry.
Inspection has always been a hot topic when it comes to coatings projects. There are some substrates that can be harder to specify due to not knowing without knowing which testing is relevant to specify and properly inspect the substrate and surface after it is coated. Concrete is probably the number one substrate that is confusing. This paper will dive into the testing that is relevant when specifying coatings for concrete tanks and structures. Whether it is how to properly check film build or whether or not an ASTM test is relevant, this paper will clear the waters and make specifying coatings for concrete tanks and structures easier.
It has become common practice for specification writers to require minimum tensile pull-off adhesion strength values as part of the acceptance criteria for protective coating work for concrete substrates. These values are convenient for specifiers because a minimum number provides a black and white basis upon which to define success versus failure. But there is much more to performing and evaluating adhesion testing than a hard and fast number.
Asset owners spend significant monies each year on the construction of new and the maintenance of existing infrastructure. More than ever, these funds can be difficult to procure and budget. The owners include, both municipal and industrial entities and funds are limited in most cases, therefore, asset service life is very important to all parties.
Chloride induced corrosion is recognized as a significant disease in the nation's concrete infrastructure. This paper will provide an overview of the various corrosion mitigation techniques available and then focus on two innovative methods of using discrete anodes embedded within the concrete to provide corrosion protection to existing structures.
The effectiveness of organic commercial migrating inhibitors on steel reinforcements corrosion. Four series of concrete specimens were cast. Two organic migrating inhibitors were applied. Free corrosion potential and corrosion rate of steel rebar were periodically monitored for five years. Results show that migrating inhibitors are not effective in reducing corrosion rate.
During the testing of circular grit chambers in a wastewater treatment plant under construction, serious leaking problems were discovered prior to project completion. After meetings with the Owner, Design and Construction engineering firms, painting contractor and coatings manufacturer, the decision was made to apply 80 mils of pure polyurea to various concrete surfaces. This presentation, through the use of photo images taken during remediation, describes the nature of the problem and how it was solved.
This presentation may contain forward-looking statements based on current assumptions and forecasts made by Covestro. Various known and unknown risks, uncertainties and other factors could lead to material differences between the actual future results, financial situation, development or performance of the company and the estimates given here.
Two types of impressed current cathodic protection and a sacrificial method were used to protect over 100000m2 of reinforced concrete caissons and deck slab of a new ship repair yard. This paper describes the CP and monitoring systems used and compares the monitoring results from the different types of system and probe.
