(Concrete) My “Poly” Has Bubbles: The Continued Challenge of Pinholes & Bugholes with Thick-Film Co

With coating and lining of concrete, while it may seem like a simple, novel task, there are always challenges. Even though concrete may be one of the largest construction materials used today, it is a complex structural matrix that can be ever changing even in a single placement. The need for coating concrete to either waterproof, or extend the life of the structure is not new to our industry.

Even though concrete may be one of the largest construction materials used today, it is a complex structural matrix that can be ever changing even in a single placement. The need for coating concrete to either waterproof, or extend the life of the structure is not new to our industry. However, there seems to still be misunderstandings related to problems that may be encountered during application work with high-solids, thick-film, thermoset coating systems. This specifically relates to many of the new-comers to this industry, and this “new” challenge being faced. The use of thick-film coating systems, and the presence of pinholing and bug hole issues during installation will be addressed by first understanding what is occurring and by use of simple, industry standards and techniques.
