Low VOC Waterborne DTM Coatings for Use in Industrial Maintenance Painting

Increasingly demanding environmental regulations for industrial maintenance coatings have put pressure on manufacturers and users of both solvent borne and waterborne coating systems. The lowering of volatile organic compound (VOC) levels to as low as 100g/L is being considered for industrial maintenance coatings in many regions of the country and has already been implemented in the South Coast Air Quality Management District region of California.

This paper will discuss the development of a new waterborne acrylic latex polymer for use in high performance primers, topcoats and DTM coatings for steel and concrete structures, with VOC levels below 100 g/L. Benefits include improved corrosion resistance, durability, adhesion to difficult substrates such as galvanized steel, and chemical and solvent resistance in a one component coating. A description of coating properties, with comparisons to traditional, higher VOC waterborne and solvent borne coatings will be provided, along with a discussion of the unique mechanism through which this technology provides its enhanced performance.
