Structures are made of different substrates and materials. In order to protect these structures from the impact of corrosion, virtually everything is coated with some combination of paints, lacquers, epoxies, and thermoplastics. Inspecting structures requires multiple types of tests including measuring the thickness of a wide variety of protective coatings. This paper will discuss flexible measurement devices and how the utilization of various probes provides the best measurement results for specific applications.
Third-party paint inspection contracts provided an immediate, tangible benefit in supplying a qualified, certified coating inspector full-time to a painting project. Inspectors could be rapidly deployed and provided someone to the project with broad experience in painting projects; however, simply providing a third-party contract paint inspector to a project did not always ensure the project was completed properly.

Industrial protective coatings can be surprisingly complicated for the inexperienced user or specifier. For example, when fabricating complex structures, the simple question of when during fabrication to paint can have an array of interesting cost and performance implications. Other issues include tradeoffs associated with degree of surface preparation and inspection for coating coverage. The paper will explore some of the reasons why they can be complicated in the context of four issues that can impact an industrial protective coatings project.
In the spring of 2014, a new SSPC-PA21 standard is scheduled to be published. Despite the fact that this is the second major revision in as many years, new technologies and techniques have been introduced since the 2014 standard was revised and sent to ballot. Some examples include a factory-calibrated coating thickness gauge with pre-defined surface profiles, as well as a scanning probe designed to be slid across a cured coating while taking readings in real time. When these new technologies are put into practice, dramatic improvements in overall inspection times and data accuracy can be seen.
