Electrochemical Noise vs. Salt Spray Tests: Is There Room For a Faster Corrosion Resistance Evaluation?

Electrification of road transport requires the development of components with improved performance, especially in terms of corrosion resistance. This is particularly true for safety elements such as the disc-brake system. Indeed, regenerative braking, which is used in electric vehicles, significantly reduces the wear of brake system components thus generating the need of brakes with a service life comparable to the vehicle life.

The manuscript investigates the interplay between electrochemical noise measurements and neutral salt spray (NSS) resistance of anodized Aluminum alloy brake calipers. A direct proportionality among anodization time, thickness of the anodic layer, noise resistance (Rn) and NSS resistance is demonstrated. The work opens the way to an accelerated evaluation of the corrosion resistance of automotive components by using noise resistance –based techniques.
