Sour gases like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are one of the main risks associated in the production and processing of oil and gas. H2S is a very toxic and pungent gas that causes problems in both the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry. Exposure to H2S, even at relatively low concentration can prove deadly and has many HSE implications.
Triazine is the most common scavenger chemistry applied to remove low level H2S in oilfield applications. Despite widespread usage, triazine is commonly incapable of efficient and effective treatment in both mixed production and direct injection applications. In these applications, triazine application has resulted in severe solids formation from scavenging reaction, increase of scaling tendencies, and oil and gas contamination issues in refinery and gas system processes. These issues lead to high overall treatment cost and unsatisfactory performance.
This paper describes recent development and successful field implementations of two new hydrogen sulfide scavenger products that provide improved optimal treatment cost and performance. These new products demonstrated lab and field trial scavenging performance results and secondary properties in emulsion, solids formation, and scaling tendency avoidance not possible with triazine. More importantly, these products can provide less overall treatment cost and cost savings through penalty avoidance from out of spec gas and oil streams. Additionally, these products can result in CAPEX & OPEX reduction, and minimized downtime and production losses compared to conventional triazine products and processes necessary with common triazines.
