Amine solutions are used in the refinery to absxb sour gases from various refinery streams. Because of the variety of components in these streams, the solutions often become more corrosive than the amine solution by itself. A protocol has been developed to examine plant solutions for these corrosive materials. Both a lalytical and laboratory corrosion tests are used. Analyses are performed for light organic acids, such as formic, acetic, propionic and butyric. The amount of dissolved iron, in excess of about 50 ppm, indicates that the amine may contain chelating agents such as HEOZD, THEED, DEP. Once the causes of high corrosivity have been determined, recommendations are made to deal with the specific problem at each refinery system.
