Mohammed Mohamed M. Farah PhDPiping failures represents the greatest risk to the integrity of metallic components in down-stream hydrocarbon sector. The implementation of Mechanical Integrity (MI) systems in the downstream petroleum sector differ based on the interpretation of various Industry standards it is not uncommon to see numerous failures in refineries and petrochemical industries after the implementation of integrity management system. Generally the down-stream industry currently adopts Mechanical Integrity (MI) systems with Risk Based Inspection (RBI) techniques. RBI implementation requires focused effort from many disciplines within the organization to ensure that it is fully integrated and reliable. Poorly designed corrosion loops / circuits can lead to wrong prioritization and / or failure to mitigate the dominant mechanism corrosion looping is the focal component of RBI system this allows for initially assessing equipment and piping in loops / circuits rather than by individual line numbers the amount of time and effort required for RBI assessment is minimised without losing the advantages this approach provides.Well defined corrosion loops / circuit is a useful tool for providing an integrity management team with a simplified processes of grouping equipment and piping for efficient method of developing barriers and mitigations to ensure safe operations in accordance with the design intent.The Saudi Petrochemical Company (SADAF) an affiliate of SABIC has implemented an RBI system for all of its plants comprising an Ethylene Ethylene Dichloride (EDC) Styrene MTBE and Utility plants the Mechanical Integrity (MI) II involves developing a detailed and robust review of all Mechanical Integrity (Loops/circuits RBI etc) of petrochemical plants.This paper presents the initial phase of the project which involves the re-evaluation of the previously developed corrosion loops / circuits. Unlike previously a simplified approach which harmonise the corrosion loops / circuits as captured on PFDs and P&IDs was developed. This in-turn led to well-correlated and defined boundaries for both corrosion loops / circuits on PFDs and P&IDs; hence simplifying the overall RBI process.Keywords: RBI MI Corrosion Loops.
