This paper reviews corrosion issues encountered as a result of using incompatible construction materials with production chemicals which eventually lead to multiple failures. The Wafra Oilfield bulk chemical handling facility was experiencing frequent leaks during storage and transfer of corrosion inhibitor scale inhibitor and biocide chemical products. The initial design and construction of the bulk facility tanks pumps and connected piping was completed using internally coated carbon steel components due to imposed cost reduction requirements.Upon a completion of an engineering review it has been determined that the basis of design for material selection should be more focused on the chemical incompatibilities and long term corrosion resistance of materials prior to construction of the facility. The improper selection of materials and components has caused increased maintenance activities resulting in poor reliability as well as increased safety and environmental concerns due to chemical spills.When determining the most cost effective materials for a construction project it is imperative to give careful consideration to the use of Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRAs) as being a viable alternative for preventing corrosion problems which in turn increases operational reliability while lowering maintenance costs.Keywords: Carbon steel Chemical Incompatibility CRA (Corrosion Resistance Alloys) & Corrosion problems.
