This test method was prepared by NACE Work Group T-1G-17e to serve as a tool in the evaluation of elastomeric materials for use in the oil field and other energy-related areas where CO2 gaseous environments are encountered. This standard presents information on CO2 environment testing under pressures greater than atmospheric pressure. By issuing one standard test method, data from separate laboratories that utilize this method may be compared. The precision of this test method and reproducibility within and among laboratories has not been established. The user of this method is encouraged to establish statistical significance of the data resulting from this method. The task group does not know of a technical organization that has issued a comparable standard test method.

No attempt or implication is made to establish any pass/fail criteria for material tested by this method. The change in properties of an elastomeric material is indicative of its resistance to a specific environment. This test method can be regarded only as a relative measure of the resistance of a material under the conditions of this particular test, and does not necessarily have any direct relation to service performance. The significance of the results can be determined only by each laboratory for its particular application.

Work Group T-1G-17e reports to T-1G-17 on Elastomers and Other Nonmetallics in Sour Service, which is a task group of Unit Committee T-1Gon Protective Coatings and Nonmetallic Materials for Oilfield Use. This document is published under the auspices of

Group Committee T-1 on Corrosion Control in Petroleum Production. NACE technical committees are composed of industry representatives including consumers, producers, and other interested individuals.

1.1 This test method gives procedures to measure the effect on elastomeric materials subjected to rapid depressurization from elevated pressures in dry carbon dioxide environments and is designed for testing 0-rings or other specimens of elastomeric vulcanizates. This method is not applicable to the testing of cellular rubber or porous materials.

1.2 This test method recommends procedures for the preparation of test specimens and equipment to be used, the test procedures to be followed, and procedures for reporting results. The results are determined by monitoring changes in physical and mechanical properties as well as changes in appearance after exposure to the selected test media,
