While a coating is typically measured in mils, a lining typically refers to an application of 1/16 inch or thicker. Certain industrial applications are best served through the use of a thick lining with unique physical properties that provide superior resistance against abrasion, impact, chemicals, and corrosion.
Thermal spray coatings (TSC) have been successfully used in all major sectors of the marine and industrial corrosion control coatings market.

In November 2004 ISO 19840 was published to provide a consistent method for the measurement of coatings applied to structural steel for corrosion prevention. This new standard includes methods for the adjustment of gauges to take account of surface roughness, the designation of inspection areas and the use of acceptance criteria.
Over recent years there have been interesting developments in the way marine coatings and linings are specified that have unwittingly resulted in a situation that can make it challenging to meet a paint specification as currently written.
