The authors look into the various factors that need to be taken into consideration when specifying coating systems for tank coatings and linings for existing carbon steel storage tanks. There are many factors that need to be considered including the tank design and shape; is it a welded tank or riveted? Is it a standpipe, ground storage or elevated tank? What is the design of the roof structure; floating, cone, geodome? Other consideration includes condition of the substrate and repairs required, the environment in which the tank resides, the types of commodities being stored in the vessel; operating temperatures of the commodity and if insulation is present on the exterior of the vessel? Also, what are the aesthetic requirements from the owner or community? Finally, what is the expected shutdown time for the vessel to be offline and returned to service? The authors will discuss, as well, what innovations are available to assist in speeding up the inspection and return to service times of the vessel. The paper will provide insight to all of the above listed topics to aid in the creation of more serviceable and applicable coatings specifications.
