The tank painting process for the interior of a petroleum and/or water storage tank requires proper coating selection, product application and inspection in order to achieve long-term service life. The primary cause of early coating failures in a painting project is often related to an application issue. The use of coating systems and linings formulated with Optically Active Pigments (OAP) can help to ensure correct application and inspection of the tank linings.
OAP technology can help identify pinholes, eliminate holidays and reduce premature lining failures often caused by inadequate film thickness on angles, edges or areas that are difficult to inspect.
What is the cost of Tank Linings? Are we able to answer this properly, do we take into account all the factors, and do we see the main cost driver? It is a well known fact that time is money, and if we take into account the cost of being out of service or a delay in beginning operations then the cost of time is far greater than individual costs of producing equipment and coating them.

This paper will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages from a variety of viewpoints of specifically UHP Robotics when used to prepare a previously coated carbon steel storage tank for coatings. Interviews have been conducted with UHP Business Owners/Operators, Painting Contractors, Facility Owner Representatives, Coatings Inspectors and Coatings Manufactures to obtain a broad view of the use of the technology.
Improved holiday detection of new coatings can increase a coating’s service life. This paper describes development of a fast, compact and portable holiday detector based on imaging of fluorescent coatings that is designed for ballast tanks inspection on Navy ships.
