Experience shows that a major cause of pipeline coating failure is due to improper application of the coating. This NACE recommended practice was prepared to assist users of all types of organic coating materials in obtaining a satisfactory application of the coating to the external surface of steel pipe.

Practices common to the application of various coatings are included. Material selection and detailed instructions for applying specific materials are beyond the scope of this standard and are not included.

This recommended practice, issued by NACE Group Committee T-10 on Underground Corrosion Control, was prepared by Task Group T-10D-8 of Unit Committee T-10D on Protective Coating Systems.

 

1.1 The scope and purpose of this recommended practice are to set forth the minimum acceptable requirements for the application of organic coating materials to pipelines for underground service.

1.2 The purpose of the coating is to prevent corrosion of steel pipe by isolation from the surrounding environment.

1.3 This standard describes the practices common to the application of pipe coatings, care and handling of materials, surface preparation, field joints, inspection for defects, repair of coating defects. amid the handling of coated pipe prior to and during installation.

1.4 Plant application and field application are considered separately, when necessary, to account for the capabilities of available plant and field equipment.

1.5 The selection of specific coating materials is left to the user's discretion and is therefore not considered.

1.6 Detailed instructions for applying a specific coating are not included since these are furnished by material suppliers.

1.7 Good technical judgement should determine the degree to which the minimum requirements should be exceeded in compensating for unusually severe environments, such as river crossings, rocky or exceptionally corrosive soils, and pipe inside casings.
