Recycled water quality must be evaluated to determine its potential impact on the equipment the cooling water contacts. This includes the heat transfer units, the cooling tower and even the piping of the entire cooling tower water system. Some recycled waters require further pretreatment before the water quality is acceptable while others can be used as received at the cooling system. This paper identifies the impact of various recycled water ingredients that could either be harmful or beneficial to the equipment the cooling water contacts. Case histories and guidelines are provided which illustrates both when recycled water failed but also where recycled water is being used successful in existing plants.
