The combination of an anionic primer layer with a cationic topcoat consist an ion barrier provides corrosion protection without using conventional anticorrosion pigments. The primer inhibits the anodic dissolution of the metals, and the topcoat rejects the aggressive anions from the environment entering the coating-metal interface.
This paper examines the restoration of the Robert F. Kennedy (Triborough) Bridges - lead removal and painting approaches for the three bridges which compose one of the largest and most controversial structures in NYC. The techniques employed reflect typical approaches as well as some unique operations associated with the rehabilitation of major bridge structures.
As environmentally friendly coatings, inks, and adhesive systems have evolved; additives have also evolved in chemistry, structure and effectiveness. This overview strives to present these new additive technologies in three areas: surfactants, dispersants, and defoamers. The chemical nature of these additives and subsequent performance in a variety of systems will be described.
Fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins were developed to overcome some of the problems associated with the use of fluoropolymers in coatings. These resins, which yield topcoats with lifetimes exceeding 60 years, can be cured at ambient temperatures for field applications, or at elevated temperatures in the shop. Polysiloxane (often referred to as ‘hydide coatings’) products have been one of the major technology platforms used in the European offshore sector mainly due ban on isocynate among several customers. This paper presents results of multiple test programs that have been performed to determine the effectiveness of recyclable encapsulated abrasive media to remove chlorides during surface preparation. Tests published in 2002 concluded that this technology consistently achieves significant reductions of chloride levels in comparison to those achieved with conventional abrasive blasting.
An NSRP-sponsored project investigating the cost of coatings QA suggested that current QA/QC processes have a high tendency to lead to conflict. Survey data collected during the project indicates that one in 20 inspection checkpoints is likely to result in a dispute. Some of these disputes may simply arise from the expected variability in standard coating QA test methods. Data regarding the reproducibility of coating QA measurements is generally not well understood and, in some cases non-existent. The paper will discuss the reproducibility of various measurements used in the industrial protective coatings industry.
