For the last several decades, polyurethane/polyurea spray-applied elastomeric coatings have gained market acceptance as durable, and long-lasting protective coatings. With the advances of the high-pressure impingement spray equipment technology during mid-to-late 1980’s, fast setting, two component polyurethane/polyurea coatings finally have a fighting chance in the protective coatings market.
Polyurethane and polyurea coatings are well known for their high performance, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, and high impact resistance in a various ambient temperature. However, when it comes to abrasion and tear resistance, they exhibit moderate to medium results. Ambient curing and thermosetting polyurea and polyurethane castable liners can over many of the features and benefits common with sprayed-on elastomeric coatings, while at the same time improving on the abrasion and tear resistances category. In this paper, we are going to present the chemistry of typical castable polyurethanes and polyureas, as well as competitive advantages, physical data, equipment requirement, application processes and market channels.
Olin Epoxy has designed a unique low VOC and high solids epoxy system which offers superior performance in tank liner application. The formulation of these novel materials in high temperature and high chemical resistant ambient cure tank liner will be described.

Fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins were developed to overcome some of the problems associated with the use of fluoropolymers in coatings. These resins, which yield topcoats with lifetimes exceeding 60 years, can be cured at ambient temperatures for field applications, or at elevated temperatures in the shop. New FEVE resins have been developed to enable formulators to meet air quality regulations while still producing coatings with excellent durability.
As environmentally friendly coatings, inks, and adhesive systems have evolved; additives have also evolved in chemistry, structure and effectiveness. This overview strives to present these new additive technologies in three areas: surfactants, dispersants, and defoamers. The chemical nature of these additives and subsequent performance in a variety of systems will be described.
