Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been observed for over six decades in light water reactors structural components, with wide variations in the rate of SCC initiation and crack growth. Newer materials have been adopted in the last three decades, primarily the ~30% Cr Alloy 690 (UNS N06690) and its weld metals, Alloy 52 (UNS W86052) and Alloy 152 (UNS W86152). These materials were initially viewed as immune to SCC, but are now recognized to be susceptibility to SCC, and can exhibit high growth rates in some conditions.

Unbonded flexible pipes used for transporting process fluids in offshore oil and gas production systems have a complex structure, with alternate polymer and metallic layers. Tensile armors are metallic layers constructed by the helical wrapping of high strength carbon steel wires, and they are responsible for the integrity of the pipe. These armors provide axial strength and torsion resistance to the pipe so that it can sustain its own weight and resist to stresses associated to environmental conditions and vessel motion.

The complex metallurgy associated with the typical Nickel based corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) bring forward the presence of phases which can assist environment-induced cracking. This paper presents a review of the published literature on the fields of localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking to describe the fundamental problems that need to be addressed so reliable environmental service envelopes can be identified for this type of CRA within the oilfield application conditions. The review study indicates that the passive layer instability is associated with the conditions where stress corrosion cracking can occur, hence the systematic study of the effect of the main independent variables (temperature, chloride content and sour gas CO2/H2S ratio and S0) on passivity is critical to understand the application envelopes for these alloys

The supercontainer (SC) is the current reference concept for the geological disposal of vitrified high-level nuclear waste and spent fuel in Belgium. It comprises a prefabricated concrete buffer that completely surrounds a carbon steel overpack. Welding is being considered as the final closure technique of the carbon steel overpack in order to ensure its water tightness. Welding is known to induce residual stresses in the weld zone and its vicinity, which may lead to an increased susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In this study, slow strain rate tests were conducted to study the SCC behavior of plain and welded UNS K02700 grade carbon steel exposed to an artificial concrete pore water solution that is representative for the SC concrete buffer environment. The tests were performed at 140 °C, at a constant strain rate of 5·10-7 s-1 and at open circuit potential under anoxic conditions. The synergistic effect of chloride, sulfide and thiosulfate on the SCC behavior of carbon steel was investigated up to levels of 35,000 mg?L-1 Cl-, 500 mg?L-1 S2- and 600 mg?L-1 S2O32-. In all the tested electrolyte solutions, none of the studied steel configurations, including welded and heat-affected zone materials, were found to be susceptible to SCC.

The Hanford Nuclear Reservation contains radioactive and chemically hazardous wastes arising mostly from weapons production, beginning with World War II and continuing through the Cold War. The wastes are stored in 177 carbon steel underground storage tanks, of which 149 are single-shell tanks (SSTs) and the remaining are double-shell tanks (DSTs). The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of River Protection is responsible for retrieving the tank wastes, treating them in order to encapsulate them in glass logs, and then permanently closing the tanks and associated facilities.

The use of carbon steel pipelines lined or clad with corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs) is increasing in the O&G industry. These pipelines combine the mechanical properties of carbon steel with the corrosion resistance of CRAs. Some CRAs such as AISI 316L (UNS 31603) are not pre-qualified according to ANSI/NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 part 3. The potential for corrosion and cracking of carbon steel in some applications can require a CRA liner/clad layer to resist corrosion but this can introduce the possible risk of stress corrosion cracking of some CRAs.

High strength carbon steel tensile wires confined in the annulus of flexible pipes might experience corrosion when the annulus is flooded with water, either due to outer sheath breaches or to condensation of water molecules permeating from the bore through the inner sheath. Carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules may also permeate from the bore and reach the annulus, where it dissolves into water to form carbonic acid (H2CO3).
