PREPARATION FOR SSPC QP3 SHOP CERTIFICATION
This guide describes the use of reference photographs depicting the appearance of both previously unpainted and previously painted and partially rusted hot-rolled carbon steel prior to and after abrasive blast cleaning.
The reference photographs consist of a series of 1:1 (actual size) color photographs. The photographs were taken under controlled studio lighting designed to show the maximum detail possible.
Highlighted in the guide are five initial rust conditions before surface preparation, covering the rand from intact mill scale to rusted and pitted steel, as well as previously painted steel.

This summary is a look at implementable work and a gage of the value of future work. The strategic implementation of Surface Preparation and Coatings Automation, Standardization and Digitization of Visual Inspection, and Surface Preparation and Coatings Training Certification Program could provide cost and schedule savings. Optimizing Power Tool Surface Preparation potentially will increase Shipbuilders safety, while reducing material and labor costs.
In the spring of 2014, a new SSPC-PA21 standard is scheduled to be published. Despite the fact that this is the second major revision in as many years, new technologies and techniques have been introduced since the 2014 standard was revised and sent to ballot. Some examples include a factory-calibrated coating thickness gauge with pre-defined surface profiles, as well as a scanning probe designed to be slid across a cured coating while taking readings in real time. When these new technologies are put into practice, dramatic improvements in overall inspection times and data accuracy can be seen.
