51316-7367- Premature Failure of Access Fittings Installed on High Pressure Effluent Water Lines Due to Microbiologically Induced Corrosion

Investigations of access fittings (AFs) revealed that the internals of the AFs particularly the primary seal area had suffered severe corrosion damage. Based on corrosion coupon data and accompanying bacteria analysis data & corrosion morphological features, premature failures could be attributed to microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC).

Access fittings (AFs) which are made to standard specifications and manufactured by different vendors are precision fabricated components usually made of carbon steel that are welded on to pipelines or process vessels for the installation of internal Online Corrosion Monitoring (OCM) devices such as corrosion coupons probes etc. The AF is first attached to the pipeline or vessel by welding and after subsequent weld integrity checks an appropriate hole is ‘hot-tapped’ or drilled in the section of pipeline or vessel encompassed within the AF for the installation of the OCM device.The AFs are expected to remain functional for the lifetime of the process component in the range of 20-30 years. However most of the AFs installed on the high pressure (~1800 psi) Effluent Water lines of Kuwait Oil Company’s Effluent Water Disposal Plants were found to fail prematurely (developed leaks) after 2-3 years of service and had to be removed. Subsequent investigations revealed that the internals of the AFs particularly the primary seal area had suffered severe corrosion damage. Based on corrosion coupon data from the AF locations as well as accompanying bacteria analysis data and corrosion morphological features the premature failures could be attributed to microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC).
