This project is to evolve, with the developer of a portable, sponge media blasting system, an alternative to power tool corrosion removal. This is a NAVSEA project managed by the National Surface Treatment Center (NST Center).
Overcoating an existing bridge coating system can be an economical solution to maintain bridges. Overcoating eliminates the costs for removal of old, often hazardous coating systems that were possibly applied years ago. However, prior to the overcoating process, it is necessary to establish that the existing coating is well adhered to the substrate. Coatings with inadequate adhesion must be removed. Unfortunately, though some standard test methods are available, the determination of a well-adhered coating is not an exact science.

Spray applied polyurea was introduced to the construction industry in the late 1980 s. By the 1990 s, polyurea floor systems were being installed using early formulations of polyurea, and spray equipment adapted from the polyurethane foam industry. Advancement in raw materials, polyurea formulations, specialized equipment and contractor expertise in recent years has provided increased opportunities for this technology to be used in a wide variety of concrete flooring applications.
This paper will present an overview of the current state of our national sewer system infrastructure; the current state of the art in design and construction technology for the wastewater treatment facilities; the current state of the art in protective coating technology for concrete in these facilities and structures.
