Challenges included: almost daily thunder storms, a truss structure consists of 900 tons of steel elevated on cables approximately 450 feet above an 18 acre aluminum dish, penalties for dropping anything, access from only a single suspended 700 ft walkway, limitations on weight distribution and weight loads, removal of lead and mill scale in total containment, structural limitations affecting containment installation, protection of numerous delicate wires, cables, sensors and other equipment, locating/importing equipment, bureaucratic requirements, and more.
Pacific Northwest contractor faces numerous obstacles during the application of 100,000 square feet of high density fireproofing, but uses knowledge to answer challenges as well as critics.

On March 8, 1862 in Hampton Roads, Virginia the first iron clad vessel on the seas, the CSS Virginia (known to Northerners as the Merrimac), had its way with the navy of the Union. It was able to sail unmolested among the ships of the Union Navy and fire at will while taking hits itself with impunity. When dusk arrived the Virginia went to anchorage to wait for sunrise when it could inflict more damage.
This paper will address conditions assessment, test procedures and criteria necessary to make informed decisions on overcoating or not overcoating an aged coating system. It will cover rating of adhesion and film integrity, determination of overcoating risk factors and a selection process for appropriate overcoat systems.
