Introduction to Insulative Coatings: Application Case History

The use of ceramic fillers in coatings is not new. The technology has been around in excess of 15 plus years, with constant experimentation. The market acceptance of ceramic based coatings has only generally received market acceptance in the past 5 years, as performance history had to be built to back up the manufacturer's claims.

The market acceptance of ceramic based coatings has only generally received market acceptance in the past 5 years, as performance history had to be built to back up the manufacturer's claims. Thermal Insulating Coatings or TICs, as well as materials described as "Cool Roof Coatings" or CRCs, both use ceramic-based fillers. Sometimes used interchangeably, the materials have significantly different properties and uses. This paper with compare and contrast Cool Roof Coatings (CRCs) with Thermal Insulation Coatings (TICs) through an example to clarify differences and provide the reader with a basis for comparison.
