The use of ceramic fillers in coatings is not new. The technology has been around in excess of 15 plus years, with constant experimentation. Due to the threat of Global warming, and the steady increase of the cost of energy, particularly electricity, so called "Cool Roof Coatings" or CRC’s, have received a lot of high-profile press in industry magazines due to their ability to drop surface temperature of roof structures during the summer months.
Thermal Insulating Coatings reduce a facilities carbon footprint along with being an environmentally friendly product.
Coatings are constantly being asked to go to greater extremes, such as lower VOC and higher performance. This paper will discuss coating technologies that are being asked to go beyond the typical protective and aesthetic aspects of coatings and offer other functions. Several types of waterborne functional coatings will be described, including technologies for combating noise, heat, and air pollutants.
