Integration of microstructure- mechanical with corrosion characterization of UNS S31603 material manufactured by Direct Energy Deposition

The UNSS31603 stainless steel (316-L SS) is one of the most used austenitic alloys in the industry for its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The 316-L SS is mainly fabricated by conventional methods such as casting, rolling and forging. However, in recent years the investigation and production of the 316-L SS through additive manufacturing (AM) techniques have seen a sharp increase.

The present work studies the effect of microstructure on corrosion and mechanical characteristics of a UNS S31603 stainless steel manufactured by conventional and Direct Energy Deposition (DED) methods. The microstructure of DED samples was composed of three regions: columnar dendritic, cellular, and mixed dendritic/cellular. The resulting microstructure showed that some regions were enriched with Mo and Cr and depleted of Fe at the sub-grain boundaries. The elemental micro-segregation acts as a micro-galvanic cell influencing the pitting corrosion. The corrosion resulted in more localized zones. The hardness values for the wrought and DED samples were 4.15 ± 0.27 GPa and 4.12 ± 0.23 GPa, respectively.
