Canada's oil sands are the third largest deposit of crude oil in the world, and consist of a mixture of sand, water, and bitumen. Due to an aggressive operating environment that includes abrasive sands and corrosive chemicals, oil sands equipment and process piping often experience severe wear and erosion-corrosion, which can lead to the risk of equipment failures, plant downtime or, even worse, environmental leaks [1]. Direct energy deposition processes that utilize wire feedstock have been deployed to deposit and fabricate near net shape functional metal parts at high deposition rates. Is this just multi-pass welding or is there more to it? Should the material requirements for additive be the same as those defined for welding? Is weld quality the same as part quality? A large metal additive part fabricated using a robotic wire arc additive system will be used to demonstrate the similarities and identify critical differences between essential variables for welding and additive manufacturing. The opportunities for both welding and additive manufacturing to learn and leverage one another to develop unique and novel materials, process controls and further fundamental understanding of metal deposition processes will be outlined.

Comparison of the Corrosion Performance of the As-Printed Surface of SLM 316L to Bulk Material and Wrought Counterpart

The effect of laser power on the surface finish and corrosion resistance of as-printed selective laser melted 316L was studied. As-printed surface quality and corrosion response compared to wrought 316L and bulk printed material. The surface quality of the as-printed samples was measured through surface topography and high-resolution techniques. The corrosion resistance was measured using AC and DC electrochemical techniques. The as-printed samples displayed two breakdown stages during polarization. Transpassive behavior occurred at lower potentials, followed by a complete breakdown potential that was near the breakdown potential of the bulk SLM material. The polarization resistance measured from equivalent circuits was very similar to the values obtained for wrought and bulk SLM material.

The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion resistance performance and requirements of AM biomedical implants as well as to characterize the corrosion behavior of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel in simulated physiological environment. The corrosion performance and mechanical properties of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel material in simulated physiological environment was studied. In the efforts of improving the reliability of Additive Manufactured biomedical devices, this research focuses on studying the corrosion, microstructural and mechanical properties of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel. It evaluates corrosion resistance through characterizing the corrosion behavior using cyclic anodic polarization tests in simulated physiological environment. In this experiment, the properties of 316L stainless steel parts manufactured using Selective Laser Melting SLM technique have been studied. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization test indicated that additive manufactured materials had slightly lower corrosion resistance than the casted stainless steel parts of the same grade. This was evident by the difficulty of regenerating a stable and protective passive oxide layer at room temperature as well as the instability of passivation at higher temperatures. Moreover, the additive manufactured samples showed a higher yield strength than the casted samples but lower values for elongation and ultimate tensile stress.

It has been used for many years for polymeric materials and its origin can be traced to Japan in the early 1980’s. The industrial use of AM polymeric products, then commonly introduced as stereolithography, got its start from an invention using a computer-controlled laser beam to harden a liquid polymer by Charles Hull in 1983.
