This paper describes the development field testing and operational history of a new and innovative cathodic protection anode bed backfill material. This backfill material utilizes a conductive cement mixture that is environmentally friendly as it minimizes gas generation at the anodes and also prevents sub-surface aquifer contamination. Additionally it provides lower resistance-to-earth and minimizes premature anode bed failure due to its moisture absorption and retention properties.Case histories detailing operational data from installations over the last 10 years are presented which illustrate the superior operational performance of the new conductive cement backfill as compared to similar installations using conventional cokebreeze backfill material.
