The current industry trend is installing large-sized chemical plants without standby equipment or by-pass systems. Another is the adoption of higher operating temperature to accelerate the reaction and decrease the reaction time. Because of these trends, failure in any part of the system leads to the plant being totally shutdown, thereby upsetting the production schedule. This paper discusses various considerations to be taken into account to ensure that the system is failure-proof. The considerations are loosely grouped under compounding of the rubber and the rubber lining. One important example of such a consideration is performance of the lining. In a rubber-lined steel tank, lining barriers can absorb the stored chemical media, eventually ending the life cycle of the lining and putting the chemical media in contact with the steel substrate. A recent technological commercial development is a non-wetting barrier that has been developed to combat chemical corrosion. The barrier material can be hydrophobic (contact angle between 90 and 150 degrees) and superhydrophobic (contact angle is greater than 150 degrees) organicinorganic nanohybrid materials. Other considerations to prevent interruptions to production processes are proper fabrication of the steel/metal equipment and adherence to operation/maintenance checkpoints for long service life of the protective lining.
