1. 1 This recommended practice presents accepted practices for the control of external corrosion on joints, fittings, and valves in underground metallic pipelines and piping systems by the application of protective coating systems. The guidelines presented in this document cover procedures for coating selection, coating application, and field inspection.  1.2 This recommended practice has been prepared for use in conjunction with NACE Standard RP0169 (latest revision), "Control of External Corrosion on Underground or Submerged Metallic Piping Systems," which presents accepted practices and procedures for achieving effective control of external corrosion.  1.3 The function of the coating (factory or field applied), as discussed in this recommended practice, is to control corrosion by isolating the joints, fittings, and valves from the environment.  1.4 Because of the importance of proper design, materials selection, application, and inspection of the coatings, the provisions of the recommended practice should be used under the direction of either professional corrosion ·engineers, persons who have been certificated by NACE as Corrosion Specialists, or persons who are otherwise qualified by training and experience in the field of corrosion control of buried or submerged metallic pipelines and piping systems.  1.5 The procedures and practices given in this standard should be considered during the planning, design, and construction of pipelines and piping systems.
