AsystematicstudyispresentedtohighlighttherolethatsmallconcentrationsofSO2andO2playonthedegradationprocessesandcorrosionproductcompositionandmorphologyinsystemsrepresentativeofCO2transport.Bothgeneralandlocalisedcorrosionbehaviourofcarbonsteelinwater-saturatedsupercriticalCO2environmentsareconsideredat35°and80bar.VariouslevelsofSO2(0250100ppminmole)andO2(020ppm)areconsideredinaseriesof48hourtests.Masslossmeasurementsandsurfaceprofilometryareimplementedtoquantifygeneralandlocalisedcorrosionrates.TheresultsindicatethatbothSO2andO2inhibit/preventtheformationofFeCO3whilstalsoincreasingdegradationrateandpromotingtheformationofhydratedFeSO3.Furthermoreacomparisonbetweengravimetricandprofilometryresultsindicatedthatpittingratescanbeoveranorderofmagnitudegreaterthanthe'uniform'corrosionratedetermined.Thecorrosionproductmorphologyandcompositiononthecarbonsteelsurfaceisidentifiedthroughacombinationofscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)X-raydiffraction(XRD)energydispersiveX-rayspectroscopy(EDX)andtransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM)coupledwithselectedareaelectrondiffraction(SAED)measurementsandEDXmapping.
