The previous quality control process at Newport News Shipbuilding for recording surface preparation, paint application, and associated inspections used a paper system. These records required a vast amount of physical storage space, were difficult to research and track due to the complexity of the records often consisting of multiple sheets of data. To address these problems along with others that contribute to inadequate maintenance of objective quality evidence, the company decided to take the initiative in resolving this issue by developing a paperless QA system.
The previous quality control process at Newport News Shipbuilding for recording surface preparation, paint application, and associated inspections used a paper system. These records required a vast amount of physical storage space, were difficult to research and track due to the complexity of the records often consisting of multiple sheets of data. To address these problems along with others that contribute to inadequate maintenance of objective quality evidence, the company decided to take the initiative in resolving this issue by developing a paperless QA system. This paperless system migrated the previous paper process to an electronic storage and tracking alternative where multiple users are able to access the data and, at the point of an inspection, use the electronic signature process as verification of completion. The system maintains all business functionalities while minimizing manual entry errors and identifying out-of-spec data. Also, the additional ability to generate electronic reports consisting of key data fields provides an alternative which eliminates the need for excessive physical storage space and time spent physically maintaining often cumbersome records. The primary goal of the project was to electronically manage the preservation documentation processes to improve visibility, tracking and handling of coating preservation records.

Solvent-free two component polyurethane (2-K-PU) systems have been approved as suitable protective coatings systems since many years. Two component polyurethanes are favored within pipeline and tank constructions where high performance and durability have to be accomplished under harsh conditions (e.g., field application, high service temperatures, high salt load, wet soil conditions etc.).
Inspection of coating applications is more efficient and effective by the use of electronic equipment, which can store, transmit, and populate inspection reports with data. Field collection of inspection data points by manual note taking is being replaced with instruments that can capture and record metal thickness, coating film thickness, surface profile depth, surface contamination, environmental conditions, gloss levels of coatings, and adhesive pull-off strength of coatings. Electronic collection of data produces more accurately and statistically complete information than manual collection.
