Efficient Polyurethane Pipe Coatings for Harsh Conditions

Solvent-free two component polyurethane (2-K-PU) systems have been approved as suitable protective coatings systems since many years. Two component polyurethanes are favored within pipeline and tank constructions where high performance and durability have to be accomplished under harsh conditions (e.g., field application, high service temperatures, high salt load, wet soil conditions etc.).

Two component polyurethanes are favored within pipeline and tank constructions where high performance and durability have to be accomplished under harsh conditions (e.g., field application, high service temperatures, high salt load, wet soil conditions etc.). Building blocks of rigid polyurethanes were screened in the lab and resulting raw material property profile was modified in order to fulfill the requirements. Test coatings were developed, and the following tests were engineered to correspond to the typical ambient conditions of the Middle East region. Two field trials were carried out as part of the evaluation process. The performance of the coating in wet soil conditions was of highest interest. After 15 months in wet soil conditions the pipe was inspected. The coating was in excellent condition and did not show any damages. Raw materials for rigid 2-K-PU external coatings are being presented.
