Conventionally solid corrosion resistant seamless pipes are made by hot forming process. This is subsequently followed by final finishing in terms of heat treatment and non-destructive inspection. An alternative process for the manufacture of seamless pipes is the horizontal spun casting process. In this process the mold is spinning during solidification. Centrifugal forces result in the formation of a dense sound casting. Centrifugal casting process results in better mechanical properties due to finer grain size relative to static casting. This process allows pipes to be manufactured on a customized basis like diameter wall thickness and alloy composition. In terms of solid corrosion resistant alloys usage by the oil and gas industry duplex stainless steel grades have gained a large interest and application. This is primarily due to their exhibiting a good combination of strength and corrosion resistance. In this contribution the mechanical properties corrosion resistance and weldability of centrifugally cast 22 % Cr duplex alloy corresponding to composition UNS S31803 of 25 mm wall thickness has been reported. The results are discussed in relation to the material requirements necessary as per currently used industry standards for line pipe like API 5LC and DNV-OS-F 101 as well as compared with the specification and design codes used conventionally for wrought duplex steels. The results of corrosion testing as per NACE TM0177 for the base metal and weld metal shall also be reported.
