The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has traditionally been highly interested in both corrosion and flow accelerated corrosion of piping systems. In the past however the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has not exhibited a high level of interest in erosion corrosion or erosion including cavitation. This is especially true in guidance documents related to license renewal. This lack of specific attention by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to the issue of erosion was due at least in part to an industry position that erosion especially cavitation was a design issue and if occurring would be addressed prior to the expiration of a plant’s original license. This paper will discuss recent operating experience related to erosion as well as current Nuclear Regulatory Commission activities associated with erosion.
