Concrete sludge mixing and storage tanks in wastewater treatment plants can be exposed to corrosive environments. Protective linings are the best solution to this problem. But there are a number of design considerations based on this author’s experience that are not readily obvious at the outset.
Concrete sludge mixing and storage tanks in wastewater treatment plants can be exposed to corrosive environments. Protective linings are the best solution to this problem. But there are a number of design considerations based on this author’s experience that are not readily obvious at the outset. This paper will present a number of important design considerations based on lessons learned which can avert lining performance problems and ensure appropriate lining material selection. Specific examples from a number of sludge tank lining projects will be used to illustrate these design considerations.
This presentation briefly updates a two-part article printed in Water Engineering & Management in 2001. It begins with the benefits of waterborne coatings and gives examples of where they may be used.

After 35 years or longer in service, the concrete infrastructure in wastewater collection systems and treatment plants has deteriorated due to various corrosion and physical degradation mechanisms. This paper reviews the major mechanisms that cause deterioration of concrete and protective coatings. Also, examples of infrastructure degradation are presented along with a discussion of the best diagnostic methods for condition assessment of concrete for the various mechanisms.
Coating application projects require coordination and communication between the owner, specifier, coating manufacturer, and applicator in order to succeed.
