This recommended practice sets guidelines for the selection of coatings for concrete surfaces in nonimmersion and atmospheric services. Concrete in these services may be coated for the following reason: protection of the concrete, aesthetics, decontamination, hygiene, sealing, and resistance to frequent cleaning.

1.3 Scope

1.3.1 This standard describes physical and chemical properties of coatings for atmospheric exposure to assist in understanding and selection of concrete coatings.

1.3.2 This standard describes concrete surface treatments.

1.3.3 This standard describes service conditions by the physical and chemical severity to which the coating will be subjected. These conditions include:

1.3.3.1 Water repellency,

1.3.3.2 Ease and frequency of cleaning,

1.3.3.3 Aesthetics,

1.3.3.4 Prevention of concrete dusting,

1.3.3.5 Mild chemical exposure,

1.3.3.6 Severe chemical exposure,

1.3.3. 7 Moderate physical abuse, and

1.3.3.8 Severe physical abuse.
