This paper/presentation will discuss and demonstrate some uses for several analytical tools/instrumentsrelated to troubleshooting problems associated with industrial coatings.
This paper will highlight several analytical techniques and instruments used to evaluate industrialcoatings. I will cover methods used for research and development, manufacturing, quality control andfailure analysis. The material will likely be less exciting and glamorous than an episode of CSI but thereare some similarities in the equipment used. A toolbox full of good analytical equipment and theknowledge of how to use it can make a big difference in the determination of why a product failed or didnot perform as intended. Many things can go wrong on the best job or manufacturing site. Knowing howto evaluate for a root cause of a problem and having the tools to do so can make a big difference in thetrouble resolution process.

Every day a new specification comes out naming coating manufacturers reps as performers of Coating Inspection duties on projects. These often include multiple scheduled job site visit commitments and having the manufacturers rep sign off on inspection hold points. I know that in some instances this is due to old outdated engineer and owners’ specifications where this stipulation has been in the documents for years and no one ever bothered to remove it, even though they may agree with me on this point.
