Advanced Subsea Corrosion Protection via Modulated Impressed Current Cathodic Protection a Prototype Demonstration and Comparative Evaluation

This study introduces a modulated Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system, specifically designed for Oil & Gas subsea production structures. Unlike traditional Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection (SACP) systems, which provide a constant output, the prototype operates on a closed-loop feedback system to dynamically control cathodic potentials within a specified voltage range. This allows for adjustments to varying environmental conditions, such as seawater temperature and microbial activity. The paper outlines the design, development, and testing of this innovative ICCP system and offers a comparative evaluation with existing SACP methods. In doing so, it addresses some of the limitations of current SACP systems, including issues like hydrogen embrittlement and premature anode depletion. The goal is to demonstrate the enhanced effectiveness and sustainability of the proposed ICCP system in subsea corrosion protection. Future work aims to integrate a patented predictive modeling feedback mechanism to further optimize the system's adaptability.
