The many diverse requirements for seamless tubular products used in oil and gas down hole applications require a wide range of custom products. The level of required corrosion resistance is determined by temperature and the corrosive nature of the environment. This requirement is satisfied by proper selection of Fe-Ni-Cr-Mo or Ni-Cr-Mo alloys with sufficient alloy content to resist attack under even extreme conditions. A high level of strength is required to withstand internal pressure as well as the inherent weight of thousands of feet of tubing in the string. In solid solution alloys cold work is the usual method of strengthening. Cold work can be applied by pilgering drawing and roll extrusion to the desired strength level sometimes exceeding 160 Ksi (1100 MPa) while maintaining good ductility and meeting limiting hardness levels. Obtaining desired properties of difficult to produce alloys in a wide size range up to 24 inch OD can only be achieved by use of multiple facilities employing a range of melting extrusion and cold working procedures. Finally achieving the desired combination of properties must be accomplished at a reasonable cost.
