There are a number of petrochemical plants that experience equipment failure and production loss due to corrosion. Proper maintenance of their existing equipment greatly reduces a plant’s down time therefore allowing production to continue. For those facilities that do not have an existing maintenance-painting program, we have developed a beginners / non-technical program guide that is easy to understand and implement as it addresses many plant’s existing and future coating systems.
Computerized maintenance painting management programs are used to inventory painted items, maintain historical coating data, optimize the scheduling of painting activities, and develop budget estimates for the work. While the sophisticated programs are quite effective, their true benefit is not realized unless someone takes ownership of the program, updates the data every few years, and uses the wealth of planning information that is available.

Pull-off adhesion testing of coatings is commonly used for product testing and qualification as well as quality control / quality assurance. However, initial adhesion values do not necessarily correlate with service life of coatings or their corrosion protection performance. Adhesion of several product chemistries to steel is examined in this study before and after immersion exposure. Results are presented within the context of laboratory corrosion testing in an effort to investigate the significance of adhesion testing in modern lining systems.
Pull-off adhesion behaviors of 15 coating systems in three groups were studied utilizing test method ASTM D4541. Three groups of coating systems included coating systems with organic or inorganic zinc-rich primers, polymeric polyurea coatings, and overcoating systems applied on an existing coating system.
