Diakont has developed a new technology for reliable API 653-compliant floor inspections in filled storage tanks.
Diakont has developed a new technology for reliable API 653-compliant floor inspections in filled storage tanks. The conventional inspection method requires tanks to be drained and cleaned, causing significant downtime. The new Diakont technology allows operators to conduct routine inspections without extensive operational impact via a robotic inspection system that is certified explosion-proof. The system uses magnetic flux leakage (MFL) sensors to detect anomalies and an ultrasonic (UT) sensor array to confirm and characterize findings. Expert NDT technicians evaluate inspection data in real time; the results are suitable for complete API 653 inspections, small-scale assessments to support risk-ranking, or baseline data. The system has performed initial inspections in a tank filled with water.
This section of pipeline was in a high consequence area. Low flow, its narrow internal diameter, tight bends and plug valves made the pipe unsuitable for traditional smart pigging. Industry worked with pipeline service vendors to develop a suitable solution.

Soil-side corrosion of the bottom plates of aboveground storage tanks is the main cause of tank failure. A case study is discussed in this paper, in which failures of three storage tanks were investigated. Soil analysis revealed high salt content and low resistivity.
