This paper presents an approach for the testing of an alternate material of construction, Type 2205 (UNS
S32205) duplex stainless steel, for use within the biotechnology industry with the results of this testing
strategy utilized to justify the first known commercial use of Type 2205 within this industry. The
material selection criterion, qualification testing, and service performance of a 75-liter Type 2205
duplex stainless steel research vessel are presented. The corrosion resistance, mechanical properties,
electropolishing properties, and rouge resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel are discussed as well as
the rational used to justify the selection of this material for a 2000-Liter Buffer Prep tank for a biotech’s
new commercial Fill/Finish facility.
