Typical flow patterns for a gas-oil-water flow encountered in pipelines with elevation changes are three-phase stratified types of flows (stratified or annular) and slug flow, where water and oil phases may not be completely mixed; and gas mixed-liquid two-phase slug flow and stratified flow, where water and oil phases are mixed. This paper reviews a number of effects of flow on the various aspects of corrosion, i.e., whether water is in continuous contact with the pipe wall, what the clock positions of contact are to the pipe wall, and how to couple the flow characteristics with corrosion rate prediction. This paper also presents a case study to illustrate methods to employ such flow simulation results and In-line-Inspection data to prioritize locations for corrosion monitoring and inspections.
